Every day, I become more disgusted with the actions of some people who profess to spread Jesus’ teachings. From Pat Robertson calling for “taking out” a country’s elected president, the Jerry Falwell crowd preaching what can only be called hateful messages about homosexuals, to Michael Heath and Paul Madore spreading their own homegrown form of bigotry.
It seems they all forgot the part about everyone being God’s children and the message to love one another.
I moved back to Maine after retiring partly to escape the racial problems and fundamentalist bigots in the South, only to find the same skewed form of Christianity has taken root here. From railing against Harry Potter and Halloween to the campaign against equal-rights protection for gays, many among us need to return to the message of peace and love that Jesus brought.
