Articles I read in the Sun Journal regarding the price of gas in Iraq is five to 10 cents a gallon and billions of our tax dollars are going over there. In Indonesia, the people are complaining because the price of gas almost doubled from 79 cents a gallon. Places like Canada have gas prices by the liter that add up to around $6 per gallon. However, in Canada, the gas is high because it helps pay for their free medical care. Strange how these prices are different? Some oil shareholders have made a 36 percent gain on their shares.
President Bush asked Americans to conserve. Some Americans are conserving because they want to, while others are forced to because they can’t afford the gas prices.
Now our governor and government is worried because due to conserving, they are not making as much with the state’s tax on gasoline. If the people of Maine have to tighten their belts, should not the governor get the message and also tighten the government’s belt?
Everyone should vote no on the bond issues coming up in November for roads, piers in Portland and better roads for traffic around the Maine Mall. After all, by driving less, better roads around the mall won’t be needed, as there will be less traffic. One benefit will be cleaner air due to less gas consumption.
