WATERFORD – The Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District and Lakes Environmental Association invite the public to attend a series of events marking the completion of the Keoka Lake Water Quality Improvement Project.

During the past three years, the Keoka Lake Association, conservation district, lake association, Maine Department of Environmental Protection and members of the community have been working together to reduce the amount of eroding soil entering Keoka Lake with the ultimate goal of protecting water quality.

By the time the project ends this fall, a total of 15 erosion control projects will have been completed in the Keoka Lake Watershed, including high impact sites like the Keoka Lake boat ramp, Plummer Hill Road and the Hawk Mountain access road.

The following events will showcase some of the work that has been completed in the watershed and give members of the community a chance to participate in the protection of Keoka Lake.

Thursday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m.: Hawk Mountain Access Road work party. With support from the town of Waterford and local volunteers, improvements have been made on the steep, chronically eroding road. Volunteers are needed to help stabilize a few remaining areas. RSVP to Colin Holme at 647-8580.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon: tour of project sites. Lunch will be served at the end of the tour. Participants will meet at the Keoka beach/boat launch, Route 35/37, and carpool to look at several erosion control projects that were completed through the grant. RSVP to Heidi at the Oxford County SWCD, 743-5789, ext. 101.

Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 9 a.m.: project presentation to Waterford selectmen’s board. It will include a PowerPoint presentation with before- and after-photos of project sites. For more information, contact Heidi at the Oxford County SWCD.
