CANTON – Two young girls and their cat, missing from their Peru home since Sunday night, were found Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. James Miclon of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said the 11- and 13-year-old sisters ran away from their foster home in Peru sometime after 7 p.m. The foster parents had been caring for the two girls for the past several months, said Miclon.

A woman living on the Pine Point Road reported seeing two girls with a cat at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sgt. Tim Holland, along with Med-Care Ambulance Service, responded to the report.

The girls were taken to Rumford Hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia and released Tuesday night. Miclon said the girls had spent the past two days sleeping in the woods in the Canton area.

He said the two had run away at least once before, when they were living in a foster home in Rangeley.
