LIVERMORE FALLS – Town police have asked selectmen to designate Union Park, Skateboard Park and the recreation field on Foundry Road as “safe zones” under a new law that allows police to double the fines for certain crimes within the zones.

The law allows heftier fines for drug dealing and allows police to outlaw firearms within the area, as is already done in school zones.

Under a second new law, nonprofit organizations may put up “tollbooths” on roadways and stop traffic to ask for donations, but police will ask groups to fill out a form so that the department will be aware of their activities.

In other matters Monday, the selectmen:

• Rejected all bids on the Hillcrest property and decided to explore other options, including listing the property with a real estate agent.

• Decided that winter road maintenance would continue as it has been done in the past, with two trucks being dispatched at the start of a storm and a third truck if necessary.

• Received several new applications for the job of town manager. The search committee will meet next Monday to review the resumes.

The board also asked anyone interested in serving on the school board to contact the town office.

Selectmen also noted that the cannon on the grounds of Livermore Falls High School has been donated to the town by the Riley family. It will be cleaned and moved to a new location yet to be determined, selectmen said.
