FRYEBURG – Gemma Young of South Paris was the owner of the Grand Champion 4-H beef at the Fryeburg Fair this year.

She is a member of the Dalmatians 4-H Club and an independent 4-H member in the beef project. She has shown beef animals all of her 4-H career, including fairs in Maine and the Eastern States Exposition.

The Reserve Grand Champion was won by Raymond Gueshee-Frost, member of the Saco Valley Beef, Sheep and Swine Club in Fryeburg. He has been showing beef for his entire 4-H career in Maine and at Eastern States Exposition.

Forty members participated in the 4-H beef show at Fryeburg, coming from counties in Maine and New Hampshire.

The 4-H beef project is a learning experience, teaching members the responsibility of taking care of their animals, exercising them and marketing them. It teaches them the importance of record-keeping and how to manage feed and expenses in order to make a profit.

The new enrollment year for 4-H started in October and anyone interested in joining can contact Susan Jennings at the Oxford County Extension Office at 743-6329 or 1-800-287-1482.
