AUBURN – For the 20th year, the International Association of Chiefs of Police is offering a service called the Halloween Candy Hotline. The service, for law enforcement use only, allows police departments access to technical assistance and expertise when investigating reports of suspicious candy or related problems.

The service can help police determine whether an incident is malicious or the result of a manufacturing or shipment error, for instance.

At the Auburn Police Department, officials remind people who believe their children may have been handed tampered treats to call them at 784-7332.

Police also advise parents and others to review lists of safety tips typically circulated around the Halloween season. Among them, parents are advised to let their children only visit homes that are well-lighted and obviously participating in the trick-or-treat tradition. Parents are also advised to examine treats before allowing their children to eat them.
