ROCKLAND – Canyon Productions and the Saltwater Film Society of Mid-Coast Maine will present an evening of 1950s sci-fi horror films as part of the second annual Maine Spook-A-Thon! Saturday, Oct. 22.
Spellbinding tales of horror will be shown beginning at 7 p.m. Here is the lineup:
• ‘Legend of Sleepy Hollow’
Narrated by Bing Crosby, based on a story by Washington Irving,1958, 34 minutes
Story of a tiny New England town haunted by the specter known as the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
• ‘It Came From Outer Space’
Starring Richard Carlson, based on a story by Ray Bradbury,1953, 81 minutes, in 3-D
All the rage in the 1950s, this B-movie horror classic returns to the big screen in all of its campy glory. An alien ship crashes in the Arizona desert, and the extraterrestrials assume the identities of the locals in order to buy enough time to make repairs. This is considered the best of the Roswell alien exploitation films and was the first to use a desert setting based on the terrain of New Mexico. 3-D glasses included with pass.
• ‘House on Haunted Hill’
Starring Vincent Price, directed by William Castle,1958, 75 minutes
Eccentric millionaire Frederick Loren (Vincent Price) and his wife invite five people to a “haunted house” party. Whoever will stay in the house for one night will earn $10,000 each. As the night progresses, all the guests are trapped inside the house with ghosts, murderer and other terrors.
Award-winning narrator Terry Bregy will provide improvised commentary and local musician Ryan Quigley will provide live music during intermissions. Special effects coordinated by Atomic Studios.
All decked out
For the Mr. and Mrs. Maine Spook-a-thon Royalty Contest, ladies and gentlemen are encouraged to break out the black lipstick and gloves and practice their best blood curdling scream. Competition includes evening wear and interview.
The interior of the theater will be adorned with haunting props, some life-size. The theater will offer apple cider and Halloween goodies.
Passes for the 2nd Annual Maine Spook-a-thon may be purchased at the box office window at The Strand Theatre, 345 Main St. from 6 p.m. the day of the film. Passes are $12. Discounted passes are $10 for seniors, students and anyone in costume. Spook-a-Thon passes enter attendees into door prize drawings.
