Getting a little more defensive the last two seasons hasn’t kept Allyson Craib from scoring goals, and it certainly hasn’t hurt the Bowdoin College field hockey team.

Craib, a senior from Harrison, collected the fourth goal of her senior season Tuesday in a 5-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington.

That victory was the Polar Bears’ 11th straight. Bowdoin is ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division III National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll and is the lone remaining unbeaten team.

Bowdoin could clinch the top seed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday with a triumph at Trinity.

Craib moved into the backfield prior to her junior season, and the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School graduate thrived through that transition.

She is tied for third on the team in both goals (four) and total points (nine) while scoring on an exceptional 57 percent of her attempts.

A sociology major and education minor, Craib notched a goal and an assist in an 8-0 victory over Husson. Craig also found the cage in a 3-1 verdict over Colby and a 4-1 win versus Connecticut College.

Craib, who has started all 11 games, is one of four Mainers on the squad. The others are sophomore goaltender Kate Leonard of Eliot (Phillips Andover Academy), freshman midfielder Julia King of Yarmouth (St. Mark’s) and freshman forward Tamlyn Frederick of Foxcroft.

Getting a leg up

Amanda Favreau of Sabattus is back to her old ways for a new women’s soccer program.

After the four-year starter at Oak Hill High School saw her senior season cut short by a broken leg that required surgery to install a plate and nine pins, Favreau returned to the playing field at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. The small, Catholic institution had only fielded a varsity team for one season prior to Favreau’s arrival.

Favreau needed little time to show that she had completely recovered. She was third on the team in scoring as a freshman, chalking up four goals and an assists to help guide the Griffins to their second straight Atlantic Women’s College Conference title and NCAA Division III tournament berth.

Now primarily bolstering the midfield as a sweeper in her sophomore season, Favreau has scored one goal. It was an important one, however, standing up as the only score in a 1-0 season-opening victory over Bard College.

Chestnut Hill is 8-4 overall and 4-1 in its conference.

Nice run for a rookie

The UMF cross country team continues to reap numerous North Athletic Conference awards. The latest winner is freshman Teri Slawek of Weld. Slawek, a Dirigo High School product, captured NAC Women’s Rookie Runner of the Week laurels for the period ended Oct. 16.

Slawek crossed the wire 48th at the State of Maine meet. She navigated the 5-kilometer course at Colby College in 22 minutes, 29 seconds.

For the second week in a row, Lewiston senior Joe Fitzsimmons brought NAC Men’s Runner of the Week recognition to Farmington.

Fitzsimmons fashioned his fastest time of the fall, 27:54, to finish 25th in the state meet.

The Beavers also received plaudits in women’s soccer and field hockey. Senior Kristy Veazie of Dexter chalked up four goals an an assists in a pair of field hockey victories and was NAC Field Hockey Player of the Week. Veazie has scored 15 goals this season. Freshman soccer fullback Heidi Jackson of York was named NAC Rookie of the Week.
