PORTLAND – Celebrating the September release of their newest collaboration, “Together Again – Bulgarian Bebop,” Ivo Papasov and Yuri Yunakov will perform with their ensemble Sunday at the Center for Cultural Exchange. They will play at 7:30 p.m. as part of a 24-city North American tour.
A folk-dance workshop will precede the event at 6 p.m.
This concert features a historic reunion of the superstars of Bulgarian “wedding music”: Papasov, Yunakov, Neshko Neshev and Salif Ali.
Wedding music, which was created by these artists in the 1970s, showcases virtuosic technique, improvisation, rapid tempos and key changes. Genres, such as jazz and rock, and sources, such as Turkish and Indian music, are combined with Balkan rural and urban folk music.
The four musicians played together until the early 1990s in the wedding band Trakiya. The band toured many times in Europe, as well as in North America and Australia.
Tickets: $22 in advance, $25 day of show. The workshop costs $10. Buy tickets at the box office at 761-1545, online at www.centerforculturalexchange.org or at Bull Moose music stores.
For the first time in a decade, they have recorded together again.
