Dear Sun Spots: My question is I have no insurance and need to go to a dentist. Could you please tell me who is good and inexpensive? – Flower, No Town.
Answer: Unfortunately, this is not a question Sun Spots feels qualified to answer. However, try contacting the Department of Human Services, 396 Griffin Road, Bangor, ME 04401, (207) 561-4100, (800) 432-7825 to check into the MaineCare program and dental coverage. Adults are covered only for emergency dental treatment to stop pain, infection or tooth loss. If you need teeth extracted so that you can get other medical services, like radiation or heart surgery, MaineCare will pay.
Regarding other dental needs, you may be able to work out a payment plan with your local dentist, and Sun Spots would urge you to contact the practitioner to see if this is something you could set up.
In addition, you might also check into the low-cost dental care available at the University of New England’s Dental Hygiene Clinic on the Westbrook College Campus, 716 Stevens Ave., Portland.
The clinic is a teaching clinic so appointments may require more time than a typical dentist’s office. The fees, charged to offset the cost of operating the clinic, depend on the patient’s age and needs. For patients age 12 and under, the fee averages $20, and for patients age 13 and over, the fee averages $30. There is also a discount for senior citizens. Normal cleanings at dentist offices in the area can cost up to $100. Services are available to the general public, and there are no income restrictions. Services include: oral inspections, nutrition counseling, scaling and plaque removal, personalized oral hygiene instruction, blood pressure screening, radiographic surveys (X-rays), fluoride treatments, sealants, athletic mouthguard fabrication. Phone (207) 797-8999, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Thursday for an appointment. The clinic only operates September through April.
Dear Sun Spots: St. Catherine’s Sodality will hold its annual holiday fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the Parish Hall, Paris Street, Norway. Crafters are needed. Tables are available for $10. Please contact Rita at (207) 743-5760 to reserve a table. – Ann Saar, Turner.

Recently you printed a request from an organization looking for board games for teenagers. I have a number of games, but unfortunately I have misplaced the name of the organization. Would you please reprint it? Thank you. – Lorraine Latour, Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: I have a large bunch of clothes I’d like to send somewhere that the hurricanes hit. We are going to clean out our closets, and all of the clothes are in good condition. Some of them shrank when we weren’t looking, and we can’t get into them anymore. I can’t understand it! Anyway, where do we bring them? I’m sure they need them, and we surely don’t need them hanging in our closet reminding us of leaner times! – Sonia, No Town.
