MILTON TOWNSHIP – More than 30 firefighters responded to a fire Thursday night that destroyed a mobile home, an attached addition and all contents.
Rumford Fire Department Lt. Keith Bickford said the owner, Gordon Peace, had just stepped out a few minutes before the trailer, located off a side road from East Milton Road, caught fire.
Six pumpers from the Rumford, Mexico, Woodstock and Andover fire departments responded to the 6 p.m. call. The Peru Fire Department stood by at the Rumford Fire Station.
Firefighters were on the scene until 9:30 p.m.
Bickford said the devastation was so complete that the cause may not be found. A wood stove was operating at the time of the blaze, but it was not known Thursday night whether it was a factor. He plans to investigate the site on Friday.
Peace is staying with friends. His home was not insured. Bickford estimated the loss at about $30,000.
Also responding to the call were Tri-Town Rescue and Med-Care Ambulance Service.
