The Grammy nominee will perform at the State Theatre.

PORTLAND – The year 2003 was a one of milestones for Susan Tedeschi, who will perform Saturday, Oct. 29, at the State Theatre. With her last album, “Wait for Me” in the Billboard Top 200, the album’s first single “Alone” tearing up the Triple-A radio charts, and raves in “People,” “Rolling Stone” and “USA Today,” the year was already off to a hot start for Tedeschi.

Then she scored a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, which placed “Alone” in the company of songs by Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow.

A few days after the Grammy nomination, Tedeschi was invited to open for the Rolling Stones West Coast tour dates, as well as perform on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

In 2004, Tedeschi and “Wait for Me” were nominated in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category for the 2004 Grammy Awards.

Tedeschi was also nominated for a Best New Artist” at the 2000 Grammy Awards, along with Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Kid Rock and Christina Aguilera. She didn’t take home a trophy that night, but her nomination grabbed the music industry’s attention.

Now, with her latest album, “Hope and Desire” to be released this fall, Tedeschi once again cements her reputation as a heart-in-the-throat singer, sneaky-sharp guitarist and sweetly evocative songstress. The album features everything from blues to R&B to rock ‘n’ roll to roadhouse improv.

“I don’t really know how to describe what I do, other than ‘American roots,’ ” Tedeschi said.

“I think back to the ’60s when Bob Dylan, Mahalia Jackson and Muddy Waters would play on the same bill. It’s all music that comes from the soul.”
