Having been traveling the road from Lisbon to the Lewiston-Auburn area for many years, I couldn’t have been more pleased when outer Lisbon Road was converted to four lanes. Traffic gets very heavy at certain times of the day, what with Bath Iron Works, Elmet and Liberty Mutual traffic. The conversion eased what was a problem for years.
There might be a slowing of traffic with three lanes, but, no doubt, it will become a passing lane, especially in the winter, when it would be the most dangerous.
If someone wants to pass me, I much prefer a passing lane rather than a turning lane. When the snow comes, the lane lines will become obliterated, and cars will pass recklessly with three lanes.
Changes should never be made simply for the sake of a new convenience store. As a safety factor, certainly, for normal traffic, but not to funnel vehicles to a store.
