LEWISTON – Alfred A. Mercier, 85, of Begin Terrace, Sabattus, died Saturday morning, Oct. 22, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion.

He was born in Lewiston, Nov. 1, 1919, the son of Israel and Albertine Plante Mercier. He was educated in Lewiston schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Mariette Moreau on May 3, 1952, at Saints Peter and Paul Church.

Prior to his retirement in 1975, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Lewiston as a letter carrier.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Knights of Columbus Council 106, Wallace Assembly Fourth Degree, DAV Chapter 11, American Legion Post 158, Veterans of Foreign Wars Lisbon, Sabattus Senior Citizens, Horizon 55, Covenant 50 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He is survived by his wife of Sabattus; twin daughters, Joanne Mancine and her husband Steve of Livermore and Joline Stevens and her husband James of Wales; a son, Richard D. Mercier and his wife Yvette of Lewiston and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo Mercier of Brunswick.

He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Nadeau; and four brothers, Joseph, Lucien, Alphonse and Edmond.
