The content of the headline and opening paragraph of the Sun Journal’s front-page story Oct. 13 on a Census Bureau report on unmarried persons living together showed very poor editorial judgment.

Describing adults who choose this lifestyle as “shacking up” and “living in sin” was a crude use of language, and represented a harsh judgment inappropriate for a news article.

The story went on to present information and educated opinion in a clear and straightforward manner, but the headline writer and reporter, who were apparently seeking an eye-catching lead-in, should have known better.
