The Lewiston School Committee has changed its next meeting date from today to Nov. 14.

Committee members agreed to the change because there was little on the Oct. 24 agenda. They could have pushed the meeting to Oct. 31, but some members could not attend because they had Halloween plans.

The November meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the Lewiston Regional Technical Center.

A rezoning plan to allow a big-box store development at Lewiston’s turnpike interchange passed its first test with City Councilors on Tuesday.

Councilors voted unanimously to pass a rezoning for a 30- to 40-acre retail development on first reading. They’ll review the plan again at their next meeting on Nov. 1.

The site is directly across from the intersection of the turnpike exit ramp and Alfred Plourde Parkway. Currently, plans call for a shopping complex with up to two big-box anchor stores and things like restaurants and smaller retailers.

Auburn: Council agrees to Franklin school deal

Proceeds from the sale of the Franklin School building at 22 Pine St. should be used to pay for future school capital projects, councilors agreed Monday.

The Auburn School Department moved the alternative high school to the old Chamberlain School building on High Street last spring, leaving the Franklin building empty. State law lets the department transfer the building to the city for sale.

Councilors agreed that any proceeds from that sale would be put into a capital improvement fund for school repairs and projects.

Lisbon: Camera monitors traffic, not drivers

For those who have been wondering about that camera attached to the Central Maine Power Co. pole on Route 196 at the intersection with Main Street in Lisbon Falls, here’s the scoop: It’s not a surveillance camera for the nearby bank or to catch drivers running red lights.

According to Town Manager Curtis Lunt, the camera has been there for a while. He described it as a laser technology device that views westbound traffic and controls the signal lights at the busy intersection so the lights change with the traffic demand.
