“Beginning next Saturday, Oct. 29, it will cost you 10 cents to make a telephone call from a pay station in Lewiston or Auburn,” it was announced last night by James T. McCroary, district manager for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. Although the 275 pay station mechanisms already are converted to the 10-cent fee, about 20 repair men will have to go to each pay phone next Saturday, pull a “shim” to make the changeover and test each phone.

Calling it the “anchor” and the “linchpin” of housing revitalization in the inner city area, Lewiston Board of Appeals members Wednesday unanimously granted an appeal allowing the proposed housing project on Knox Street known as Centre Ville Commons to be undertaken.
“It clearly seems to be the linchpin, the renaissance for the development of this section of the city. I can’t see any reason why we shouldn’t approve it in my mind,” said board Chairman Bryan Dench. The board quickly approved the request.
The $3-million-plus rehabilitation will eventually change the entire face of Knox Street, from Birch to Spruce street, by razing some buildings and performing interior and exterior renovations on the remaining buildings.
