AUGUSTA – The Maine Arts Commission is accepting nominations for Maine’s next poet laureate. The position was last held by Baron Wormser of Hallowell, whose term has expired.

The commission has been charged by the legislature to accept nominations for the post. That agency and the Maine State Library will choose a recommendation for Gov. John Baldacci’s approval.

Nominees must be residents of the state and have published distinguished poetry. Nominations, which may come from the poet or another party, must include a nomination letter, resume and four copies of a published book. The criterion for selection is artistic excellence. The poet laureate will be appointed by the governor for a five-year term.

Mail nominations postmarked no later than Nov. 30 to Donna McNeil, contemporary arts and public art associate, Maine Arts Commission, 193 State St., 25 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0025.
