AUBURN – Mathew C. (Jack) Smith, 80, formerly of Greene, died Thursday, Oct. 20, at Clover Manor Health Facility.
Born in Waterville, Jan. 27, 1925, the son of William and Mildred (Sandner) Smith, he was educated in the Rockland school system and graduated from Rockland High School in the Class of 1943, playing varsity baseball, basketball and football.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, serving his country in thr 625th Engineering Company during the European and Pacific theater, also participated in the Normandy invasion and was honorably discharged in March 1946.
On July 3, 1947, Jack married the former Elizabeth Rackley in Winthrop.
While growing up and early adulthood, Jack worked for Home Method Bakery in Rockland, until he moved to Greene, which was owned by his grandparents, George and Margaret Sandner. After moving to Greene he attended a University of Maine agricultural course and farmed the Rackley Farm in Greene. Jack also worked in construction before his retirement in 1986.
Jack was a member of the Registered Holstein Association, Androscoggin Grange 8, the Monmouth Masonic Lodge, VFW Post 11032, Greene Rifle Club, Greene Men’s Club and Greene Senior Citizens, and also was on the board of directors of the Valley Cemetery for several years. He served on the Greene Board of Selectmen twice.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Smith, now of Auburn; and one brother, Clarence (Larry) Smith of Mars Hill.
He was predeceased by one sister, Lucile Long, and two brothers, George and William Smith Jr.
