AUBURN – Storm sewer projects will bookend downtown for the next month.

Crews will begin tearing up Mill Street in New Auburn, between Broad and Second streets Monday, according to Norm Lamie, superintendent of the Auburn Water and Sewerage district. They’ll move the project to Second Street, between Mill and Dunn streets, later this week.

At the same time, crews from the city Highway Department will be installing a storm drain catch basin on Mill Street, between Second Street and Riverside Drive.

Crews are replacing an old sewer line that collapsed in 2004, Lamie said.

“We’re going to completely abandon the old pipe there and replace it with two systems, a sanitary sewer and a storm sewer,” Lamie said.

That work is scheduled to wrap up later this week.

City crews will begin a new project just north on Main Street between Vine Street and Mechanics Row on Oct. 31, according to City Engineer Steve Ranney. That work should take three weeks to complete and will slow down traffic in the area, he said. The city is planning to detour traffic around Elm Street during the work.

The city has scheduled a preconstruction meeting with downtown merchants and neighbors to discuss the Main Street work at 10 a.m. Thursday in Auburn Hall.
