AUBURN – Councilors will take another look at a ban on firing guns in the southeastern part of the city.

Councilors agreed to put the ban on the agenda for a special meeting on Oct. 31.

That had hunters from the area pleased.

“We got what we wanted, at least so far,” said Scott Davis of 234 7th St.

Councilors voted Sept. 26 to add 430 acres to the zone where firing a gun is prohibited. They added land east of Washington Avenue and south of Hackett Road. Some residents in the area, including the Spurwink School on Danville Corner Road, had asked for the ban.

Police sent an officer around to discuss the ban with neighbors in the days leading up to the vote and heard little disagreement.

But police missed several property owners, including some who own land but live in other cities.

Davis said he collected a petition with 80 names last week asking councilors to reconsider. Councilors agreed to give the matter a second hearing.

“Nobody is to blame here,” said City Councilor Belinda Gerry. “We went through the process and we assumed that everyone had been notified. It was a goof up, that’s all.”

Mayor Normand Guay said he planned to reform a committee to study the city’s firearm zone.

“Development has changed us so much, this isn’t just a problem in Danville but the whole city,” Guay said. He urged Davis and other hunters in the area to join the committee.

“I know just how emotional an issue this can be,” Guay said.
