GREENE – The status of a road brought residents to the selectmen’s meeting Monday night.

A controversial issue that surfaced during the town’s annual meeting last March left Deer Run Phase 1 as the sole section of the Deer Run subdivision not to be named a public roadway.

However, Deer Run Road residents are now one step closer to having their road become a public roadway as they become compliant with the board’s request.

That request was for Phase 1 residents to create an escrow account to pay for road maintenance needed before selectmen will recommend having the road added to the town’s responsibilities.

Residents have said they are now ready to gather $14,000 to place into an escrow account.

Selectmen said there are still hurdles. Chairman Ron Grant said that once the money is gathered, it must be offered to the town, which then would announce a special town meeting for taxpayers to speak on the issue. If the road passes at the special town meeting, residents of Deer Run Road would then need to supply a clear copy of the deed and title to the town manager. Only then could the road be considered a town responsibility. Grant said that if accepted, the road will not be paved this year due to the cool weather.

The selectmen meeting opened with a moment of silence to honor three residents who had recently passed who were all known for their many years of service to the community.

Robert W. Philbrook served on the Greene Comprehensive Committee, Planning Board, Budget Committee and was a member of the Greene Conservation Commission for 23 years. He died on Aug. 21.

Clyde S. Libby was road commissioner for five years, sexton at Valley Cemetery and assistant chief of the Greene Volunteer Fire Department for nine years. He died on Oct. 11.

Mathew Smith served as selectmen for two terms and was among the board of directors for the Valley Cemetery Association. He passed on Oct. 20.
