JAY – Selectmen accepted a resolution Monday to designate Greater Franklin Development Corp. as the town’s representative to an economic development advisory committee.
Jay has about 144 acres in the state-sanctioned Androscoggin Valley Pine Tree Zone that was created to offer incentives to eligible businesses in targeted areas such as manufacturing and technology to open new business or expand an existing business.
Alison Hagerstrom, executive director of the Greater Franklin Development Corp., told selectmen she has been representing the towns that have property in the zones.
Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, designated as the administrating entity on behalf of all communities within the zone, has established an advisory committee for the administration of the zone. Hagerstrom said she could continue to represent Jay, or selectmen could designate their own representative. Some towns have opted to designate an alternate member to the committee, she said.
Selectmen unanimously voted to continue having the Farmington-based development agency represent Jay on the board.
In other business, resident Pearl Cook said she didn’t think Jay should be proud of an all-day yard sale entity set up on Maxwell Road.
“It’s quite embarrassing,” Cook said.
Town Manager Ruth Marden said Code Enforcement Officer Shiloh Ring and recycling and transfer station coordinator Bob Sanders have been out to speak to the people there.
It is a consignment and second-hand shop and has a tax number through the state, Marden said.
Some of the stuff is being hauled away, Marden said, and a fence has been erected around the property.
The situation is being monitored, she said.
In other action, selectmen also approved :
• General assistance ordinance as outlined by the state.
• John Chouinard and Mike Pineau as regular Planning Board members and Dennis Stevens as an alternate member.
