LEWISTON – A 17-year-old was in intensive care and another teen was in custody Monday night after a reported stabbing on Sabattus Street.

Police said the 17-year-old was stabbed in the upper chest about 4 p.m. as he was walking in the area of Bartlett and Sabattus streets.

The teen, who was not identified, ran into DVD Mania on Sabattus Street and asked employees there to call for help, police said.

At the scene, the teen was conscious but he was initially unable to tell police who had stabbed him. Police began to search the area around Sabattus, College and Bartlett streets, but no suspect was immediately found.

“The best we can tell, there were no witnesses,” said Lewiston police Lt. Tom Avery. “At this point, our information is limited.”

Traffic on the Main Street end of Sabattus Street was slowed to a crawl as police and emergency crews went to the scene.

The youth sat on a curb in front of DVD Mania, a store next to Rancourt’s Laundry, as he was treated by paramedics. He was later taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he remained Monday night.

Police said the teen was stabbed with a knife just below the left nipple. His wound did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

The victim lives a short distance from the area where he was stabbed, police said. He told investigators he did not know the person who stabbed him or offer a motive.

By late Monday, the teen was being held for observation in CMMC’s intensive care unit. No further information about his condition could be obtained.

Police said they were searching for a possible suspect described as a Hispanic man about 18 years old who may have been wearing a white T-shirt at the time of the attack.

At about 10 p.m. on Pine Street, police Officer Matt Vierling located a teen wanted for questioning about the attack. A 17-year-old was taken to the police station for questioning.

“We are confident we have the assailant in custody,” Avery said, shortly after the second teenager was taken to the police station. “We are still searching for the weapon, which we believe the suspect disposed of.”

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call police at 784-6422.
