LEWISTON – A 17-year-old Lewiston boy was arrested Tuesday, charged with stabbing a friend a day earlier in a fight over a girl.

Police charged the teen with aggravated assault and elevated aggravated assault in the attack that left another 17-year-old Lewiston boy with a stab wound to the chest.

Neither of the teens has been identified.

About 4 p.m. Monday, the victim ran into a Sabattus Street business bleeding from a stab wound, police said. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, and police said he initially told them he did not know who had stabbed him.

Investigators working the case spoke further with the victim after he was treated at CMMC. Police began to suspect that one of the boy’s friends had stabbed him after the pair argued over a girl, according to police Lt. Tom Avery.

Police found the suspect about 10 p.m. Monday in an apartment on Pine Street. He was questioned and ultimately arrested. Early Tuesday night, the teen was being taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center, a lockup for youth offenders in South Portland, police said.

The victim of the knifing was held at CMMC for observation Monday night. He was expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday night or today.
