Paul Madore and Michael Heath are on a crusade to keep all citizens in Maine from having equal rights.

On a recent public television discussion, Heath was asked a very simple question: Is it OK to fire someone because they are gay? Heath refused to say yes or no. This indicates to me that he does believe it is OK.

In a Sun Journal article, Madore complained that he has lost business because of his views on equal rights. What he did not indicate is that he has not lost his job because of his views. He did not indicate that if he had a gay employee, he could fire that employee, and the person would have no recourse for that action.

The only thing this law does is provide the same protection under the law that heterosexuals and people of differing races and religions have. It will not change civilization as we know it.

Our society and way of life are works in progress. Our Founding Fathers allowed black people to be kept as slaves and declared them to be less of a person than a white person. Women were not allowed to vote. Over time, we learned those ideas were wrong and immoral.

Now is the time to end another form of discrimination. I encourage everyone to vote no on Question 1 on Nov. 8. Let it be known that Maine will not tolerate discrimination.
