LEWISTON – A Maine theater group will present an original drama to promote discussion of a referendum question on gay rights at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Lewiston-Auburn College.

The company, called Roil, will perform “Close to Home” in the upstairs lounge of the college at 51 Westminster St.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Question 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot seeks to overturn the state’s new gay rights law.

The theatrical piece is meant to clarify what “no” on Question 1 means, to motivate those who support a “no” vote and to encourage community dialogue about civil rights and protection from discrimination.

The company of actors will also facilitate a discussion with the audience, provide voter registration cards and distribute information about the referendum to voters.

“We’re trying to get people to look at this question from different ideas and perspectives,” said cast member Paul Miller. “In doing that it was important to portray the emotions and conflicts that people feel and not rely on stereotypes of people on both sides of the issue.”
