NORWAY – Channing Baker “Chan” Penley, 86, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, with his loving family by his side after a short illness. He was a resident of the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

He was born in Lisbon on July 15, 1919, the son of Bertrand Winfield and Angeline (Baker) Penley. He attended Pownal schools and joined the U.S. Army in 1940. He was a staff sergeant prior to his discharge in 1945, after which he served with the National Guard until 1949. He was a farmer, route delivery driver and a construction carpenter. He retired from Brown Construction Co. in 1986.

On June 7, 1942, he married Madeline Grant in Gray. They were married for 54 wonderful years. She passed away on Aug. 26, 1996.

He enjoyed being outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He and his wife camped for more than 30 years at the Sebago Basin Campground in North Windham. After retirement, he enjoyed working on small engines and making doll houses.

He is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Moreau of Auburn and Elaine and husband, James Golding, of Deerfield Beach, Fla; a sister, Theona Penley Blackstone of Pownal; a brother, Bertrand W. and his wife, Viola L. Penley, of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren, Christopher and Melissa Moreau of Auburn, James and Cathy Moreau of Gray, Michelle and Roger Andrews of Brunswick, and Kevin and Denise King of New Boston, N.H.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed spending time with his nine great-grandchildren, Conor, Kaleigh, Courtney and Keegan Moreau, Craig and Ashley Moreau, Ryan and Justin Andrews, and Alexander King.

His infant brother, Winfield Scott; his younger sister, Dorothy Penley Powers; as well as his son-in-law, Lloyd Arthur Moreau, predeceased him.
