I am astounded that any group calling itself Christian could actively lobby for such blatantly unkind and un-Christian discrimination as Question 1. This is not the teaching of the Jesus I know and love. I am offended that his name is used to prescribe this narrow, mean-spirited interpretation of “morality.”

In fact, Jesus Christ says nothing about homosexuality. Rather, he consistently urges us to love our neighbors, treat each other with respect and kindness, and do unto others as we would have them do unto us. I guess I must extend this courtesy to those who believe differently, but I wish they’d do the same and stop trying to legislate their exclusionary morality.

Homosexuality, like heterosexuality, is a given, not a choice. And it’s not such a big deal. It just is. We don’t choose our sexual orientation, we are born with it. If heterosexuality was the sin, would we leave our spouses, abandon our children and friends? Would we still deserve rights and respect?

Gay folks deserve protection under the law, like other minority groups who have received rough treatment. The fact that this is an issue speaks to their need for equal rights.

As for the Christian Civic League, I urge members to talk to gay folks, their families, friends and advocates. Get to know the actual people being excluded and follow Jesus’ teachings before casting another stone.

I am voting no on Question 1 to preserve equal rights for all of us.
