SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Doris Elsemore, 96, of Southern Pines, N.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Penick Village.

She was born in Milford, Mass., on Nov. 29, 1908. She became certified as a nurse anesthetist in 1937 and began working at the Rumford Community Hospital in Rumford the same year.

She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps First Auxiliary Surgical Group during World War II, from 1942 to 1945.

After the war ended she returned to Rumford, where she worked again at the Rumford Community Hospital and where she met and married Dr. James MacDougall in 1950. Following a long illness, he died in 1981.

In 1985, she married Dr. Dexter Elsemore, a retired physician and surgeon from Dixfield.
