NEWINGTON, Conn. (AP) – The body of a former high school wrestling coach was found in the aftermath of a fire that swept through his home late Saturday.

Authorities said Richard Hastings, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters were called to his Cedar Street home just after 11:30 p.m. and found the building engulfed in flames.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes and crews discovered Hastings’ body on the second floor.

Hastings had been a popular wrestling coach at Newington High School.

“He had a big heart. He’d do anything for anybody,” former student Brian Mulcahey told WFSB-TV.

Local and state fire marshal offices are investigating the cause of the blaze.
