LIVERMORE FALLS – More than one child hesitated to go behind the blue tarp to enter the dark corridor where a sharp scream pierced the silence.

Children clutched adults’ hands a little tighter Saturday while others needed to be carried as they slowly walked toward the dim light into SAD 36/Jay Adult Learning Center’s haunted house.

A maid in a black dress sliced a large plastic knife through the air as she warned people to watch their step.

Visitors who dared to proceed stepped down into the former mall.

A grim reaper with a white face appeared from the corner and followed behind the visitors.

Some children let out cries as they squeezed closer to those they were with.

Others bravely walked silently on.

Once past the maid, plastic spiders dangled in the air. A cheerleader burst into a peppy “rah, rah, rah.” Another grim reaper sat on the corner of a brick wall, while a teenager dressed for the prom asked people to take her the prom.

Wwwwoooo. Aaaahhhh and other sounds haunted visitors when they turned the corner into another darkened area.

More scary people dressed in black, paint smeared on their faces stepped out in front of them. A little further and a grim reaper shook the door of her cage as visitors neared the end where light glowed from a jack-o-lantern.

Once there, children had a chance to sign their names on the tarps before entering the learning center for treats and fun activities.

Students in the Livermore Falls High School drama program had designed their own costumes for the haunted house. They’d worked as group to develop their roles.

“It’s wicked fun,” Christina Dufour, 15, of Livermore Falls said Saturday as she took a break while no one was walking through. She had fashioned her costume as a maid with a knife.

A lot of kids went through, she said.

Some couldn’t go through the whole thing, Danielle Couture, 15, of Livermore Falls, said. She was costumed as a dead prom queen.

At first, it felt bad scaring people but once you get into character, Kelsey Wilkins, 16, of Livermore said Saturday, you get the reaction you’re looking for, just like in a play.
