LEWISTON – A Portland theater group urging a no’ vote on Question 1 will also be appearing at Bates College Wednesday, after previously announcing a performance at Lewiston-Auburn College.
“Close to Home: A Performance and Dialogue on Referendum Question 1” will be offered at 7 p.m. at the Bates College Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The group will perform at 5 p.m. on the second floor of UML-A, at 51 Westminster St.
The performances are by a theater group that calls itself ROiL, and has a goal of stirring things up for social change, said Joanna Horton, one of the performers. ROiL is touring Maine to fight possible repeal of a law Nov. 8 that currently makes it illegal to discriminate in housing, job and credit because of a person’s sexual orientation.
“The idea is that performances are different than debates or campaigns, because the audience experiences discrimination and gets an inside perspective,” Horton said.
The performance will include presentations about:
• A Christian-right family whose values are put into question by their daughter.
• An apolitical mother whose daughter lost her day care after the lesbian caregiver was evicted.
• Real people’s stories about how they were discriminated against, as given last year to state lawmakers.
The performances last 40 minutes, and are followed by group discussion, Horton said. The performances are free. For more information, people may call Horton at 712-9347, or go to www.roilnow.com.
