MEXICO – The Police Department’s move to the Mexico Recreation Center last month has prompted the need for a new parking lot and a reversal of the street that goes to it.

Public works employees were busy Monday morning digging up what was once a lawn beside the Mexico Recreation Center. When the job is done, expected sometime this week, eight parking spaces will be available for police cruisers and the general public who visit the Police Department.

The local department moved from cramped quarters in the basement of the Mexico Public Library to three large rooms in the recreation center. The brick building was once Mexico High School.

Public Works Director David Errington said plans are to reverse the one-way direction of the unnamed street that goes to the Police Department at the rear of the recreation center.

He said people who want to visit the Police Department will be directed to get to the department from Parker Street, rather than Mitchell Street. The change is expected to take place within a week or so.

Although the new parking lot will be gravel-covered for now, plans call for covering it with hot-top it sometime next year, providing voters approve the estimated $3,000 for the work. Also, signs pointing people to the Police Department are expected to be installed within a couple of weeks, Errington said.
