JAY – The superintendent of schools plans to recommend the consolidation of bus runs from two to one to carry students in grades kindergarten through 12 to school after Thanksgiving break.

The Jay School Committee is scheduled to consider the bus run consolidation at its meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Jay Middle School.

The proposal is expected to save money, reduce use of gas and ease overcrowding on the bus.

The committee held a public hearing on the proposal last month and several parents spoke against the proposal. Concerns cited included children learning about sex, drugs, obscenities and disobedience. Other concerns included students being monitored by cameras from a remote site and not having a second adult on the bus, and younger children having to get up earlier to be at school at 7:45 a.m. instead of 8:45 a.m.

School Superintendent Robert Wall said Monday he will ask the board to begin the consolidation of bus runs on Monday, Nov. 28, and that the consolidation run through the remainder of the 2005-06 school year.

School officials plan to present evidence that many schools in the state transport students of different ages on regular bus runs, Wall said.

“We’re always looking to do the right thing for students educationally and operationally,” Wall said.
