The members of the United States life saving crew at Popham have been granted off one full day in each eight. Heretofore they were allowed only from sunrise to sunset, and if a man’s day off was stormy he had to work. About 200 men at different stations along the New England coast will be affected by the new order. Chief Superintendent Samuel J. Kimball at Washington has worked hard and long to secure this privilege for his men, says the Bath Times.

Eleven whaling vessels, comprising almost the entire fleet, which sailed from San Francisco have been caught in the Arctic ocean. They will not be able to get out until next July or August and in the meantime, the crews of 440 men must face the hardships of a winter in the North.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Dale Carnegie, 66, a once shy youth who rose to wealth and fame as a speech teacher and author of “How To Win Friends and Influence People,” died. The author and lecturer headed the Carnegie Institute of Effective Speech and Human Relations, which conducts courses in 750 United States cities and towns and in 27 foreign lands. A half million persons have taken the courses.

Polio case reports dropped to seven last week, a sharp cut from the 17 of the previous week and the lowest point since the week ending Oct. 1, when six occurred.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Just placing a “toll-free” telephone call for an airline reservation could boost ticket prices before Christmas. Those “800” numbers are scheduled to cost more for the heaviest users by Dec. 14, if the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) grants approval.

Airlines, hotel-motel chains, car rental agencies, direct marketing firms, banks, and other industries would see increases as high as 80 percent in their telephone bills. Bus and trucking companies, publishing houses, and insurance firms would also be hit hard.
