I was disturbed to leave Mass on Sunday morning and find a flier on my vehicle that was parked in the church parking lot instructing me on how, as a “Catholic Faithful,” I should vote on Question 1 on Nov. 8. (I am a member of the Catholic community.)
The people responsible for printing the flier did not even identify themselves. Perhaps this is because distribution of such fliers on church property is a clear violation of the rules and regulations of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. Who, I wonder, has appointed himself to become my conscience? Much of the information in the flier was inaccurate and misleading. Someone, or some group, is trying to set the fear of God in me and my fellow parishioners if we do not vote in favor of the referendum.
I have heard no statement on the topic from our bishop. I might have wished that he would have supported the no vote, but the lack of a statement from him confirms my opinion that a no vote is not a vote against any church teachings, as the information in the pamphlet suggests.
On Nov. 8, I will vote no on Question 1. I will vote my conscience. No one, for any reason, should be discriminated against. I am hopeful that other Maine citizens will join me in voting no.
