Regardless of whether voters keep, or throw out, Maine’s gay rights law on Tuesday, will the losing side try again?

Will it propose another law?

Launch another referendum?

Both sides weren’t ruling it out Friday. They said it was too early to say.

“I can’t speak to that,” said Ted O’Meara. Maine Won’t Discriminate’s “No on 1” campaign can’t focus on what happened in past or future elections, O’Meara said. It can only key on Tuesday’s vote.

Lewiston’s Paul Madore of the Maine Grassroots Coalition said a decision for another referendum would be made carefully.

“I don’t foresee it automatically. We’d have to evaluate all the circumstances,” he said.

The other side has twice resurrected the issue after voters said no, Madore said. “It’s more likely they’ll put in another piece of legislation and will continue to override the will of the people.”
