BRUNSWICK – Two months into her freshman year at Bowdoin College, Alison Coleman is grateful for lots of things.

For roommates she likes. For classes that excite her. For a soccer coach that emphasizes teamwork over winning.

“I feel like I’ve adjusted pretty well,” said the Lewiston High grad.

But there was a hint of trepidation in her voice. The reason? Two midterms and two papers due the same week.

“I’m feeling a little stressed,” Alison said two weeks ago. “And when I get stressed, I get homesick. So I’ve been missing (my family) a lot lately.”

Luckily her grandparents had recently taken her out for lunch. And the final game of her JV soccer season against Colby was helping distract her from the pressure of her studies.

“It’s an even bigger rivalry than Bates,” she said, predicting her team would do OK against the Waterville women. (Colby won, 3-1, in a hard-fought and fun game, said coach Julie Barnes.)

Ali was more nervous about forecasting her success with the midterms and papers.

“They definitely require a lot of effort,” she said. “I’ve been working on the papers already, but you know…” as her voice trailed off.

But then her voice bounced back. The next weekend was parents’ weekend and her folks would be there.

“Yeah, they’re coming for it,” she said brightening. “I’m glad,” she added. “Their daughter needs a hug.”
