What a thoughtful column written by Rebecca Whitney (Oct. 23). It should make us all think about just how tenuous our existence is. But the innuendo that our current government should have done better and have been ready to do better for all of the people involved in that disaster on the Gulf Coast is uncalled-for. Our efforts have been spread pretty far and wide, and no single person, or other entity, could have foreseen the damage that prevailed.

And, yes, there is poverty in that area and in many other areas in this and other countries. To blame all this on our president at this time is unconscionable. We have been fighting the “War on Poverty” for 60 years and have spent more that $6 trillion in that effort. And we still have people living on the edge of existence.

Whitney’s column should be a wake-up call for all of us to expand our efforts to help and not just be political complaining copycats, who can only complain and not help.
