How nice it was to see the skiing community give a much deserved thank you to Dick and Mary Kendall by inducting them into the Maine Skiing Hall of Fame. That was way overdue.

I, however, would like to say thank you to them for something completely different. You see, I was brought up on Howe Street in Auburn, which is parallel to the Kendall property, separated by Taylor Brook. As a youth, my friends and I couldn’t wait for Taylor Brook to freeze over so we could drag our sleds and toboggans across the brook to the Kendall property, where we could enjoy the day, or sometimes a moonlit night, sledding down the long and beautiful hill overlooking the brook.

I don’t ever recall asking permission for use of their hill, but not once did they ever try to stop us.

Those are great memories of wonderful times I would hope the youth of today will have as well. (But don’t forget to ask permission.)

So now, 40-something years later, I would like to offer my thanks to the Kendalls for the use of that wonderful hill. I’m sure there are many more kids from that neighborhood who would like to sign their names to this letter.
