LISBON – Five people, including four local teens, were injured in a fiery two-car head-on collision on Route 9 late Monday afternoon.
A 17-year-old driver was trapped inside his burning vehicle, while his front-seat passenger, also 17, was able to get out and crawl to safety.
An unidentified passer-by rushed to the aid of the trapped youth, cutting his seat belt and stabilized his neck, and together with Officer Ryan McGee, pulled him from his car as flames were shooting out of the hood.
Both the driver and his passenger were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, with non-life-threatening injuries, McGee said.
Two passengers in the rear seat, a 15-year-old and 17-year-old boy and girl, were examined but not admitted to the hospital, police said. The names of the teens were not released.
The driver of the second car, identified as Michelle Olds, 40, of Sabattus, complained of pain and was admitted to CMMC.
According to McGee, Olds, who was alone, was driving south on Route 9 near Law’s Nursery when her car crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding head-on with the other car.
The older-model four-door sedan that the teens were traveling in was destroyed by fire. Lisbon Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. Olds’ 2005 Volkswagen was also demolished.
The investigation was continuing Monday night. McGee said speed was not believed to have been a factor in the 5:17 p.m. crash, and all were wearing seat belts, which no doubt prevented more serious injuries.
