DIXFIELD – The Adult Reading Group of the Ludden Memorial Library met the first Tuesday of November in the downstairs conference room. Tea, coffee and refreshments were served.
The first book reviewed was “90 Minutes in Heaven” by Cecil Murphy. Murphy has written or co-authored 91 books, including the autobiography of Franklin Graham.
“The Europa Conspiracy” is part of a new fiction series by Tim LaHaye called the “Babylon Rising Series.” It is another adventure of the hero, Michael Murphy, a biblical archeologist.
“The Kennedy Curse” was reviewed. The novel starts in 1858 with the first Kennedy from Ireland to come to America. It continues until the plane crash involving John Kennedy Jr.
“O Rugged Land of Gold” was next on the list. It is nonfiction that came out in 2002. It is the story of Helen Bolyan, an independent woman, during World War I She graduated in 1920 from the University of Maryland and went into the service. She later became a teacher and moved to Alaska. She was caught in a landslide but managed to survive against impossible odds.
“The Weight of Water” by Anita Shreve was discussed. It depicts the Islands of Shoals where a horrendous murder took place in the late 1800s or early 1900s. The main character, a photographer, is interested in the topic and goes to the island to investigate and take photos. A storm builds and a tragedy occurs, connecting the photographer with the story she is researching. The ending is dark. The reader did not like the ending, feeling that this particular book was not as good as some of Shreve’s other writings.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the downstairs conference room. One does not have to be a library patron to attend.
