TUCSON, Ariz. – Basil D. Rounds Jr., 84, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly a long-time resident of the seacoast, died on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Tucson.

Born in Lewiston on July 8, 1921, he was a son of Basil D. Sr. and Nellie D. (Anderson) Rounds and attended local school, graduating from Lewiston High School with the Class of 1938.

Following high school, he served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy until 1944. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1944 until his retirement from the supply department in 1974.

On June 14, 1941 he was married to his loving wife of many years, Lorraine P. (Beaudoin) Rounds, who predeceased him in 1997.

In 2001, Basil moved from his home in Kittery to Tucson, where he was closer to his cherished daughter, Donna Lee Rounds, and his son-in-law and best friend, Cosmo DeSantis.

A loving, quiet and gentle man, who loved the sea on the coast of Maine and the mountains of the West, has now made the journey to a shining sea and will be greatly missed by the family he held so dear.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Donna Lee Rounds of Tucson and her husband, Cosmo DeSantis; a brother, Richard H. Rounds of Tucson; a sister, Shirley A. Philbrick of Corpus Christi, Texas; one granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Joyal and her husband, Richard, of Barneveld, N.Y.; two grandsons, Christopher J. Rolfe and wife, Mary, of Falmouth, and William D. Rolfe and wife, Brenda, of Ayer, Mass.; seven great-grandchildren, Audrey and Richard Joyal, Brandon, Allison and Tyler Rolfe and Zachary and Alexandra Rolfe.
