GREENE – Olive Hazel Allen, 84, died on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Olive was born in Holden, Mass., on Sept. 22, 1921, to the late Percy Howard and Agnes Mae (Washburn) Bedell.

After graduating from high school, she attended Tufts University and the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing.

She married Julian H. Allen on June 13, 1943. They settled in Corning, N.Y., where they raised three children. She played an active role in the community, leading Girl Scouts, teaching knitting, and serving for many years as a docent at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Her love for travel was honed by living in Paris with her family in the 1970s, and she traveled extensively and adventurously all over the world. She and her husband retired to Sarasota, Fla., where she continued to enjoy her lifelong passion for working with fiber. Her skills as a fiber artisan were recognized with several awards.

Olive was a member of the Manasota Weavers Guild, the Harvard Club of Sarasota, Fla., and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Auburn.

She was predeceased by her parents, by her husband Julian on Nov. 30, 1990; a sister, Shirley Herzberg; and a brother, Ralph Bedell.

Olive is survived by her loving children; a daughter, Dr. Cynthia Allen DeSoi and her husband, William, of Greene; her two sons, Stephen C. Allen of Appleton, Wis., and David J. Allen and his wife, Melinda, of Holliston, Mass. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Christopher Allen, Tyger Allen, Kyra Allen, Claire DeSoi and Nina DeSoi.
