OXFORD – The SAD 17 Board of Directors on Monday expelled an 18-year-old male student from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School for a violent incident.
“It involved violence,” Assistant Superintendent Mark LaRoach said when asked about the incident that led to the expulsion. He said the incident occurred about one week ago but declined to comment further.
The board’s vote to expel the student during its regular meeting was unanimous. A student is expelled for an indefinite amount of time unless there is a federal firearms charge.
LaRoach said the student can complete a readmission plan. At the completion of the plan, board members must determine whether the behavior is likely to recur before voting whether to readmit a student.
In other business, board members voted unanimously to transfer a Title I kindergarten teacher position at Oxford Elementary School to regular education status to help instruct all 44 kindergarten students who are currently attending school five days per week at Oxford Elementary.
An all-day kindergarten pilot program began at Oxford Elementary in October.
“The program is going very well but the numbers are very high,” Superintendent Mark Eastman said.
A Title I position is federally funded and mandated to instruct only students who meet federal eligibility guidelines for supplemental help with literacy.
The transfer means that teacher will instruct all kindergarten students and will be paid with local funds. The open Title I position will be advertised to find a replacement.
LaRoach said cost savings will be reduced as a result. “The net effect is that instead of saving what we originally thought, which was $28,000, we will save only $8,000. But at least we are still saving,” he said.
