LEWISTON – An Augusta woman was critically injured and another driver was hurt when a dump truck and minivan collided Tuesday on Lisbon Street.
Two-year-old Logan Havens, who was riding secured in the back of the van, was uninjured in the late morning crash, while his mother was trapped in the mangled vehicle.
Leona Havens, 27, was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center on Tuesday night with injuries that may include broken legs and an injured pelvis, according to a police report.
Havens was driving outbound on Lisbon Street about 11 a.m. when her van drifted over the centerline and into oncoming traffic, police said.
Driving inbound on Lisbon Street in a dump truck, 38-year-old Patrick Morrison, of Litchfield, was unable to react in time to avoid a collision. Havens’ Plymouth minivan slammed into the axle on the driver’s side of the dump truck, according to police Lt. Michael McGonagle.
The crash forced the closure of all four lanes of Lisbon Street, near Scribner Boulevard, as police and emergency crews worked to free Havens from the van. After 20 minutes, she was pulled from the wreckage and taken to CMMC.
Havens was listed in critical condition at the hospital. Morrison, who suffered a neck injury in the crash, was listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.
McGonagle said there were indications Havens may have fallen asleep before drifting across the centerline. However, he said the crash was under investigation Tuesday night.
Morrison was driving a 2000 Freightliner dump truck for St. Laurent & Sons, a Lewiston company, according to the police report. Damage to the truck was estimated at $25,000.
While the rescue and cleanup efforts were under way, police diverted traffic to various points along Lisbon Street, one of the city’s busiest areas. Police said there were traffic tie-ups, but no major problems as a result.
