LEWISTON – Finally, and with flare, the Lewiston Maineiacs won another game at home Tuesday night.
Mathieu Aubin had a goal and two assists, Stefano Giliati had one of each and rookie Kevin Marshall chipped in with two assists from the point as Lewiston downed Rimouski 4-2 in front of 2,008 fans at the Colisee. The win is the Maineiacs’ second home win this season, and both have come on Tuesdays.
“Five-on-five, they couldn’t play against us,” said Maineiacs’ coach Clem Jodoin. “We had speed, we were first on the puck all the time. It was good, but we can still learn something. Where can we get better? What can we improve? We gave up the second goal tonight, there was no reason why. But we got the win, and now we have to look forward to this weekend. It’s going to be a tough two games.”
Lewiston will face Moncton twice this weekend.
Jonathan Bernier was rarely busy, seeing just two shots in the first period and 20 for the entire game. Still, two shots slipped by him. On the other end, Rimouski netminder Philippe Roberge stopped 53 of 57 shots thrown in his direction.
“He’s done a great job for us all season,” said Rimouski coach Doris Labonte. “Both goalies for us, including Michael Chiasson, who we traded with Lewiston for. We have to alternate them a little bit because of all of the shots they face.”
Coming into Tuesday’s game, Rimouski had allowed an average of 42 shots against per game while taking an average of just 26.
Still, there was a sense on the winning side that 4-2 could have just as easily been 14-2.
“It’s been like this all season,” said Jodoin, “and we’re still having a hard time putting the puck in the net. Collecting the puck in the neutral zone. We had 57 shots on net, and if we had been able to collect the puck in the neutral zone probably we would have had 65 shots on net. There is still room for improvement.”
There was also a small measure of revenge in the air. The last time Rimouski was in Lewiston, they had just completed a sweep of the Maineiacs on their way to the President’s Cup.
“I am sure they wanted their revenge,” said Labonte. “We have had to deal with a lot of that this season. Halifax (which Rimouski swept out of the playoffs, too) came into our place and beat us 3-0. This season is about rebuilding for us.”
Lewiston came out firing, outshooting Rimouski 23-2 in the opening frame, yet the Maineiacs managed only one goal, a Marc-Andre Cliche score on a rebound in front on a Marshall shot from the high slot.
In the second, the Maineiacs (7-9-0-4) added two more goals, one shorthanded on a Chad Denny blast from 30 feet out, and the other a power-play tally off the knee of Stefano Giliati.
“I was in front of the net and the puck just hit off my pad,” said Giliati. “We tried to bring the puck to the net a little more (on the power play) and it’s been working.”
Rimouski started to make a move in the third with a 3-on-3 goal just 1:35 in, cutting the lead to 3-1, but Lewiston responded at 11:35, again on the power play when Aubin scored one of his own on a rebound in front.
Rimouski capped the scoring on Jean-Sebastien Cote’s eighth of the year at 14:38, but the Oceanic (4-16-0-0) would get no closer.
Lewiston resumes play this weekend with a home-and-home series with the Moncton Wildcats. Game 1 is in Moncton on Friday, with the rematch Sunday at the Colisee.
