BANGOR (AP) – A Brewer man who tried to cross the U.S.-Canadian border with OxyContin pills hidden in a body cavity faces up to 20 years in federal prison following his guilty plea to importation of a controlled substance.

No sentencing date has been set for Joshua Delmonaco, 27, who entered his plea Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents stopped Delmonaco’s car March 3 at the Milltown crossing in Calais after receiving a tip from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that he might be smuggling drugs.

The suspect was taken to a Calais hospital after agents found that he was concealing an “off-white foreign object” in a body cavity. Delmonaco eventually passed a plastic package containing 59 oxycodone pills, authorities said.

Records of border crossings showed that Delmonaco had made numerous short trips to Canada between Jan. 1 and the day of his arrest.
